Snowmobile Trails

Snowmobiles are permitted only at certain state recreation areas under specific conditions. Those who choose to ride snowmobiles at state recreation areas must register their snowmobiles and have a valid park entry affixed to the front of the vehicle. Information on registering a snowmobile is available on the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles website.

ATVs and snowmobiles are allowed on frozen (8 inches thick) lake surfaces at the following areas:

  • Bluestem State Recreation Area
  • Box Butte State Recreation Area
  • Branched Oak State Recreation Area
  • Calamus State Recreation Area
  • Conestoga State Recreation Area
  • Enders State Recreation Area
  • Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area
  • Gallagher Canyon State Recreation Area
  • Johnson Lake State Recreation Area
  • Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area
  • Lake Maloney State Recreation Area
  • Lake Minatare State Recreation Area
  • Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area
  • Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area
  • Louisville State Recreation Area
  • Olive Creek State Recreation Area
  • Pawnee State Recreation Area
  • Rockford State Recreation Area
  • Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area
  • Stagecoach State Recreation Area
  • Summit Lake State Recreation Area
  • Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area
  • Swanson Reservoir State Recreation Area

Additionally, when there is a minimum of six inches of snow on the ground, Branched Oak and Lewis and Clark state recreation areas both offer five miles of snowmobile trails. Niobrara State Park offers two miles of trails; however, the trail is currently closed due to the 2011 Missouri River flood.
