Dead Ahead: Nebraska's Roadkill Reporting Project

Nebraska’s Roadkill Reporting Project is simple but impactful — collect enough statewide reports so researchers can pinpoint “hot spots” where wildlife-vehicle collisions happen most often. That information can then be used to make roads safer for both people and wildlife by adding things like warning signs, fencing, and wildlife crossings that help animals safely move across busy highways instead of into traffic.

How it works

Survey observations will be uploaded to iNaturalist, a free community science website and app. Every observation submitted to Dead Ahead also contributes to a global roadkill dataset managed by the Road Ecology Center at UC Davis. That means observations made on Nebraska roads don’t just matter locally — they help inform national and global efforts to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions.

Required trainings

Submitting observations

Use the buttons below to register your survey site or upload your observations to iNaturalist. If you are not a trained participant but would still like to contribute to this project, you can upload incidental observations to the iNaturalist project using the “Submit Observation Data” button.
