Name the Chicks

In May of 2024, we asked the public to help us name three new peregrine falcon chicks born at the Nebraska State Capitol.

Information

UPDATE – The votes have been tallied and the winning trio of chick names, submitted by Shawn Meyer, is: Cirrus, Stratus and Cumulus!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Name the Chick Contest. Until next time!

A trio of chicks

A trio of peregrine falcon chicks — two females and one male — hatched atop the Nebraska State Capitol in the spring of 2024. The banded fledglings were the first peregrine falcon chicks to be born in the Star City’s state capitol in eight years. Their parents, Jet (father) and Atlas (mother), were both banded as chicks in Kansas City in 2021 and 2022.

Contest results

Nebraska Game and Parks asked the public to help name the chicks trio, and more than 400 people submitted their trio name ideas. Game and Parks then selected five name groups for a round of online voting, and the names submitted by Shawn Meyer of Beatrice, Cirrus, Stratus and Cumulus, won. Meyer won a year’s subscription to Nebraskaland Magazine.
