Campground Host

The Campground Host program is a group of volunteers, over the age of 18, who are willing to be ambassadors of the state park system for others. The host program generally operates from April through September every year. The hosts have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors while helping others enjoy their own camping experiences.

Campground Host responsibilities

An overview of Campground Host responsibilities include:

  • Greet campers, answer their questions and orient them to park and region
  • Assist in campground registrations and reservations
  • Be accessible to campers for comments and complaints
  • Understand and explain park rules and regulations to campers
  • Help maintain campground and park area through activities such as picking up litter, clean up camp sites after guests check out, raking, mowing, replenish restroom supplies and assist in keeping the bathhouses clean
  • Contact park staff and other law enforcement personnel about emergencies
  • Other projects and assignments based on park needs and hosts’ skills and interests

Campground Host requirements

To become a Campground Host you:

  • Must be age 18 or older
  • Must be willing to devote a minimum of two weeks to their selected campground
  • Must be on duty a minimum of 4 hours a day, but are on call in case of emergencies
  • Weekends and holidays are included in time served

How Campground Hosts are selected

Criteria for selecting Campground Hosts includes:

  • Hosts are selected on a first-come, first-served basis; they must provide their own RV or camping equipment.
  • Hosts are selected by area park superintendent.
  • Successful applicants are require to sign an agreement with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

  • Alexandria SRADates available: 6/21-7/4/2021; 8/2-8/15/2021
    • Host site is 30amp electric site. Dump and fill station on site.
  • Johnson Lake SraDates available:  6/9-6/23/2021; 9/15-9/30/2021
    • Seeking camp hosts for the Main (east) Campground. Hosts are responsible for restroom cleaning/upkeep and campsite/litter upkeep, plus being a good will ambassador for the park. Host site is a 60’x60′ 50/30/20 amp, shaded, concrete pad site with a water hook up. Dump and fill station on site.
  • Lake McConaughy SRA – Many dates available
    • Variety of sites available. Lake McConaughy SRA is a popular destination that offers fishing, wind surfing, kayaking, water skiing, and many other beachgoing activities. If you love the sun, sand, and waves, it’s the perfect place to host for a summer. Our camp host sites range from full hookup to primitive camping on the beach. Dump and fill station on site. Please call our Visitor Center at 308-284-8800 for more information about becoming a camp host at this unique park.
  • Lake Minatare SRA – Dates available: June – Sept
    • Help direct campers to their sites and answer their questions, check the shower houses throughout the day doing light cleanup, and help with firewood sales when the office is closed. Host site is an electric plus (no water or sewer). Dump and fill station on site.
  • Mormon Island SRAMany dates available
    • Come to “The Island on the Platte” and enjoy being a camp host at Mormon Island State Recreation Area. Camp host positions are open at Cottonwood and Cedar campgrounds. Both camp areas offer easy access to a water hookup adjacent to the camp host site. Cottonwood Campground offers abundant shade as well as a paved campsite. Cedar Campground host pad is gravel, but offers a waterfront campsite. Dump and fill stations are available on sites. Various duties such as housekeeping, trash pickup, groundskeeping, assisting with campground reservations, and park visitor questions will be part of the volunteer efforts in exchange for a campsite.   • Rockford SRAMany dates available
    • Spend your summer by the lake! This beautiful, remote lake park is seeking camp host for the summer. Host site is 50amp electric site.
  • Schramm Park SRAMany dates available
    • Beautiful Schramm Park SRA is seeking camp hosts to assist with opening and closing the hatchery museum and cleaning the restrooms. Hosts would also be responsible for assisting with limited canoe and/or kayak rentals on the park ponds.
  • Windmill SRA Many dates available
    • Host site is a padded electric plus (no water or sewer). Dump and fill station on site.
