Windmill SRA Aquatic Habitat Restoration Project completed

Visitors to Windmill State Recreation Area now can enjoy improved fishing access and enhanced aquatic habitat following completion of a major Aquatic Habitat Restoration Project.

The project at the Buffalo County park improved fish habitat and angler access across five of the park’s six lakes, creating better recreational opportunities while supporting long-term lake health.

Completed improvements include:

• new and upgraded Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant fishing piers, sidewalks and parking access throughout the area;
• additional shoreline access improvements, jetties, and a new parking area near Lake 4;
• excavation of shallow lake areas to improve water connectivity and fish movement;
• installation of rock shoals, floating wetlands, and other habitat structures to benefit fish and aquatic life; and
• construction of a new floodway along Lake 1 to better direct floodwaters.

These upgrades will improve fishing opportunities, shoreline access, and the overall visitor experience.

Funding was provided through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Aquatic Habitat Program, Capital Maintenance Funds, and a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust. The Aquatic Habitat Program, established in 1997, is maintained by the purchase of the Aquatic Habitat Stamp, which is included when each angler buys a fishing license.
