Commission will consider big game hunting recommendations
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for 2023 big game seasons.
Mason Hettler of Grand Island Northwest broke 74 of 75 targets and won a shoot-off Friday to capture the individual title in the 16-yard competition at the 53rd Cornhusker Trap Shoot at Doniphan, Nebraska.
It looked like an early 74 by Colton Barry of Norris might hold up until late in the afternoon on a windy day at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association home grounds. Hettler, competing in one of the latest squads put up a tying score to force a shoot-off.
Jaydn Jackman of Kenesaw won the ladies’ title with a 70. The high school team crown went to Grand Island Northwest, which broke 346 of 375 targets. Wilber 5 Clovers 4-H won the 4-H team title with a 332 and Papillion-La Vista South won the ladies’ team crown with a 312.
There were 1,536 shooters competing Friday. On Saturday, competitors will shoot 75 handicap targets. The high school shooter with the highest combined score from the two days will earn the Cornhusker Cup trophy as the overall champion.
Defending Cornhusker Cup champion Mason Gerdes of Raymond Central, a 12th grader, shot a 65 Friday. He opened with a 71 en route to the title in 2022.
