Trout in the Classroom

The Trout in the Classroom program, or TIC, invites 2nd – 12th grade classrooms in Nebraska to explore aquatic ecosystems, life cycles, water quality and the scientific process through raising trout eggs.

This program, a partnership between the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the Nebraska Trout Unlimited Chapter 710, provides schools with not only trout eggs but also curriculum and technical assistance throughout the year.

How the program works

Participating classrooms set-up a cold-water aquarium in their classroom or school. Soon after, each school is provided rainbow trout eggs. Students take ownership of caring for both their trout and the aquarium habitat by testing water quality, feeding their trout, and monitoring growth and development.  As the program progresses, students see connections between their trout, water resources, the environment and themselves.

Through the Nebraska Trout in the Classroom Program, you can expect your students to learn about:

  • Life cycles: raising trout from egg to fingerlings/juveniles
  • Water quality: daily measurements and an understanding of water quality for aquatic animals
  • The scientific process: data collection, recording and drawing conclusions
  • Food webs: aquatic food webs and the interdependence and ecology of these webs
  • Nebraska habitats: including wetlands, cool water streams and watersheds
  • Conservation ethics: the role humans play in the ecology of our ecosystems

TIC Signup

Please use this form to sign up for the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program if you already have the funds required to purchase your needed equipment. Please note that we do not turn schools away from joining the program, and this form helps us gather your information so we can communicate with you at the start of the school year.

The application window for the 2024-2025 TIC program is now closed.

TIC scholarship application

Thanks to the Nebraska Environmental Trust and Trout Unlimited Chapter 710, NGPC is pleased to be offering scholarships to aid teachers with bringing TIC into their classroom. Please fill out this form if you are unable to participate in the TIC program without acquiring financial aid to purchase equipment for the 2024-2025 School Year. Brand new applicants will apply for $1,200 scholarships to cover new supplies. This should cover most, if not all, of what you need to purchase for the program.

We are also offering $100 to existing teachers in the TIC program to purchase items that help maintain the project in their classroom.

The scholarship application window for the 2024-2025 TIC program is now closed.
