National Archery in the Schools

About the program

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is an in-school program that incorporates archery curriculum into classes for students in grades 4 through 12. Through it, teachers have seen students improve their educational performance and learn life skills like self-control, patience, and discipline. NASP is also adaptable to students with disabilities and boys and girls participate and excel in archery at similar rates.

In Nebraska, more than 300 schools are currently offering the program for their students and each year over 30,000 students participate in a NASP course in their math, history, or physical education class, and the program is growing. For youth participants, one of the highlights of NASP is the ability to compete in local NASP tournaments, all culminating in the state tournament each spring.

Nebraska Game and Parks schedules teacher training workshops to provide instructors with the knowledge to teach archery in-school. Training is available in a traditional 8 hour in-person classroom course or a hybrid format that includes online learning and then a 4 hour in-person classroom course. Once completed, teachers receive national certification to teach basic target archery. Grants for equipment are also available for interested schools.

More information on the program and the benefits of archery is available on the official NASP website.

Academic Archers

The NASP Academic Archer Program was established nationally in 2016 to recognize academic achievement among participating student-archers. All students who participate in an in-school NASP archery class or participate on the school archery team at a recognized NASP school and meet local academic criteria for recognition are eligible to be entered as Academic Archers.

Nebraska NASP Tournaments

Schools in Nebraska hold local archery tournaments throughout the school year, and Nebraska Game and Parks hosts the culminating state tournament each March. Participants in elementary, middle, and high school divisions compete individually and/or as a team. Qualifying teams may then advance to nationals.

National tournaments

National competitions are hosted in Utah for the U.S. Western National Tournament and Kentucky for the U.S. Eastern National Tournament. First place teams, those teams with qualifying team scores, and the top 10 individual boys and girls from each elementary, middle and high school division may advance to the national competition.
