Tree-thinning project begins at Ash Hollow SHP

A tree-thinning project at Ash Hollow State Historical Park has begun to reduce wildfire risk, create better access for first responders, and promote prairie and woodland health in the region.

Nebraska Game and Parks staff, in collaboration with natural resource partners, are removing trees and excess woody debris across the property and will create wildfire barriers around the Ash Hollow Visitor Center and cave areas.

The effort aims to preserve and protect the cultural, historical and natural resources at the 1,000-acre park by minimizing the buildup of hazardous fuels, which can increase the intensity and spread of wildfires. It also protects the safety of park visitors, staff and nearby communities.

Work will be completed in phases to minimize disruption to park operations and guests. During active fuel-reduction work, trails or areas of the park may be temporarily closed for public safety. Signs will be posted at the site.

Work is expected to be completed this fall.

“This project is a proactive step toward reducing wildfire risk and restoring more resilient landscapes,” said Jason Clark, a conservation forester with the Nebraska Forest Service, a partner on the project. “Fuels reduction is essential to maintaining the health of our prairies and woodlands, especially in historically fire-adapted ecosystems like those found in and around Ash Hollow.”
