Standing Bear Lake to be chemically renovated

Standing Bear Lake in Omaha will be chemically renovated April 11, weather pending, to remove the remaining fish population as part of an ongoing Aquatic Habitat Restoration Project.

Public access to the area will be limited the day of application and all entrance roads will be closed during the application process.

In addition to the chemical treatment aimed at eliminating common carp and yellow bass, the Aquatic Habitat Rehabilitation Project, funded in part by anglers’ fishing permits and accompanying Aquatic Habitat Stamps, includes:

  • Boat launch facility upgrades
  • New kayak launch facility development
  • Angler access improvements
  • In-lake habitat improvements

Some smaller construction projects have begun; however, most will begin in June.

Largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish and walleye are planned to be stocked later this year; black crappie are scheduled to be stocked in 2024.

Funding is provided by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Aquatic Habitat and Angler Access Fund, Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration, Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund and the City of Omaha.

Questions can be directed to ngpc.boataccess@nebraska.gov.
