Muskrat Run WMA opening for firewood harvest

Firewood harvest is usually prohibited at Muskrat Run Wildlife Management Area, but people with authorization will be allowed to collect it Feb. 26 to March 22, 2024.

Firewood users who receive permission from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission may cut and collect any fallen dead timber in specific areas of the property during the allotted time frame listed above. Those obtaining an authorization form will receive a map of areas open for harvest and vehicle access, users are urged to use safe practices while cutting. Muskrat Run WMA is located about 4.5 miles west and two miles north of North Platte.

Firewood harvest aids in Game and Parks’ habitat management goals on targeted areas of the property that are annually subject to excessive down timber from cottonwoods, willows and other hardwoods.

The free authorization form may be obtained by contacting Scott Aden, wildlife biologist at the North Platte Game and Parks district office at 308-535-8025, or by stopping by the district office at 301 East State Farm Rd.
