Fly rod building class for beginners starts in January

Why purchase a new fly rod when you can fish one with the satisfaction of knowing you’ve built it yourself.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, in cooperation with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and the Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club, is sponsoring a fly rod building class for beginners this winter.

The class will be held seven consecutive Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Central time, starting Jan. 10, at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln.

The cost of the class is $35. The class will include basic tools needed to build a fly rod. Each participant also must purchase a rod building and finishing kit before beginning the class. The cost of the kits varies, but a quality kit can be purchased for about $75. Participants will be given instructions and guidance on the purchase of these kit after registering. Reading glasses are recommended. Attendance during all six sessions will be required to complete the fly rod.

The education center is located at 4703 N. 44th St.
