Spend some time this summer in Nebraska’s northeastern state parks. During July, a variety of events are planned for those for all ages and interests.
Don’t forget to purchase a required Nebraska Vehicle Park Entry Permit to enter the state parks. Get one at OutdoorNebraska.gov or at state park entrances.
Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary July 3-5 with a weekend of family-friendly activities at Niobrara State Park.
Children may create a chalk nature drawing, enjoy a water-balloon fight, and take home a fun activity packet and goody bag on July 3. Later in the day there will be an opportunity to create your own red, white and blue tie-dye bandanaas akeepsake.
On July 4, enjoy a home-cooked buffalo meal followed by a special presentation at 6 p.m. at the Buffalo Cookout Shelter. Gather at Shelter 2 at 9 p.m. for an almost 360-degree view of area fireworks displays while enjoying s’mores.
Wake up July 5 with a hearty breakfast of egg scramble, bacon and muffins while learning about Dutch oven care and pioneer cooking. This $5 meal will be served at the main campground at 9 a.m.

Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary at Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area with the Red, Whie & Blue Weekend on July 3-5.
July 3 activities will include Yogi Bear Movie Night. On July 4 there will be a family‑friendly tie‑dye event featuring $4 bandanas and $10 youth t‑shirts, all ready to be transformed into patriotic masterpieces with cash‑only sales located on the Marina Patio.
Later, experience the park after dark during two lighted hayrack rides, each welcoming up to 20 riders, with $3 cash‑only tickets available at the Marina parking lot pickup site. Glow necklaces are included.
A scavenger hunt and capture the flag game will take place the entire weekend.

Participate in a monthly naturalist-led group hike July 11 and learn about the flora and fauna found at Ponca State Park.
Meet at the West Shelter at 10 a.m. and enjoy the scenic views, native wildlife, and fellowship until 12:30 p.m. Along the way, naturalists will talk about the cultural and natural history of the park. The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a Dutch oven.
Spots are limited and registration is required by calling the park office at 402-755-2284. The cost is $15.
Head to Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area the weekend of July 17 to celebrate Christmas in July.
This family-friendly event features festive activities, treats and holiday-themed fun throughout the campground and marina area.
Highlights include a camp host meet-and-greet with Dutch-oven cinnamon rolls Friday evening, wood ornament decorating Saturday afternoon, visits from Santa, and an outdoor showing of The Polar Express on Saturday night. Hot chocolate and Dutch-oven cookies will be available during the movie.
Visitors also can enjoy a campsite decorating contest, Christmas scavenger hunt, holiday chalk art, grab-and-go crafts, a holiday-themed photo booth and a special holiday swirl ice cream flavor available at the marina store throughout the weekend.
The event is free and open to the public. A valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry.

Sign up or cheer on competitors in the annual Crofton Dam Race on July 25 at Lewis and Clark Lake State Recreation Area in Crofton.
Competitors can choose among three events: A sprint triathlon with kayaking instead of swimming, a half marathon or 12-mile bike race. Participants must be 14 years or older. The Triathlon can be done individually or in teams. Kayaks are provided and medals will be awarded for winners of each age group.
Plan to stick around the finish line in Crofton for a party with food and music.

Get festive at Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area with a Christmas in July campsite decorating contest on July 25.
Campers are invited to deck out their campsites at Victory Lake and Pathfinder campgrounds for a festive Christmas drive-through experience.
Prizes will be awarded after dark as follows: First place – three-night camping stay at a walk-in campsite in the park; Second place – two-night camping stay at a walk-in campsite in the park; Third place – one-night camping stay at a walk-in campsite in the park.
Join Ponca State Park naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise July 29.
Meet at the Riverfront Playground at 9 p.m. for a guided hike of approximately one hour along the beautiful, wooded trails. The hike will include some steep inclines and is considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks.
Handheld flashlights will be provided, but guests may bring their own.
The hike may be cancelled due to weather or staffing. Call the park office at 402-755-2284 to confirm.
