Portions of the Memphis Wildlife Management Area in Saunders County will be closed for a construction project starting June 19.
A new shop complex is being constructed at the WMA to support the management needs of nine other wildlife management areas in Douglas, Sarpy, Saunders, Cass and Otoe counties. Combined, they include more than 3,000 acres of land.
While portions of the area will be closed, access to the wetland north of County Road D and the old railroad bed will remain open. Memphis State Recreation Area, just south of County Road D, also will remain open at all times.
The new complex will replace the one at Randall W. Schilling WMA near Plattsmouth, which sustained damage during the Flood of 2019 and is prone to more frequent flooding due to its location near the confluence of the Platte and Missouri rivers.
