Too cold to talk about ice-fishing … indoors. Go figure. Because of expected dangerous travel conditions, the Discover Ice-Fishing classroom clinic Jan. 13 in Norfolk has been cancelled.
The forecast extreme cold already had cancelled the companion on-ice clinic at Norfolk’s Skyview Lake scheduled later in the day.
Norfolk’s weather forecast for Jan. 13 calls for a high of minus 2 degrees, 28 mph winds and a wind chill of minus 36 degrees. Many towns in northeastern Nebraska received close to a foot a snow in the recent storm.
The classroom clinic at Norfolk’s Northeast Community College was to be hosted by the Nebraska Fish and Game Association. It would have featured presentations by some of Nebraska’s top ice fishermen. The cancellation prevents those anglers, as well as local participants, from traveling in potentially dangerous situations.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s Youth Fishing Program will host two other Discover Ice-Fishing on-ice clinics. These are where anglers can learn the basics of ice-fishing or pick up a few new tips from experienced anglers.
Lincoln – Jan. 20, 1-4 p.m., Holmes Lake (located about mid-lake along the north shoreline drive).
Omaha – Jan. 27, 1-4 p.m., Flanagan Lake, 168th and Fort streets.
The forecast calls for a high temperature in the low to mid-teens in Lincoln on Jan. 20. The high in Omaha on Jan. 27 is expected to be in the mid to upper 20s.
Limited loaner equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bait and instruction will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
