Conestoga is a 230-acre reservoir surrounded by 486 acres of land. The area offers boating, picnicking, hiking and biking trails, camping and fishing. Located just two miles north of Denton in rural Lancaster County, Conestoga is a popular getaway for visitors from Lincoln and the surrounding area.
A Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Aquatic Habitat Program and Angler Access Program project was completed at Conestoga State Recreation Area in 2018. While the lake is now open, the boat docks have yet to be installed and the fish won’t reach keeper-sized proportions until 2021. But the area offers plenty of recreation opportunities, including camping, picnicking, boating and kayaking.
Connestoga was restocked in 2018 following an Aquatic Habitat Program and Angler Access Program project and will offer keeper-sized largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish and walleye in 2021.
The work, which started in 2016, will improve quality, fishing and fishing access at Conestoga. The projects included: draining the reservoir and removing the existing fish population, which was dominated by common carp and other rough fish; removing nearly half a million cubic yards of sediment that had washed into the lake since it was constructed in the 1960s; building sediment traps, breakwaters, wheelchair-accessible fishing piers, fishing points, a new two-lane boat ramp and kayak launch; and installing fish habitat, including underwater shoals and rock and tree piles.
For more information on fishing opportunities here and at parks across the state, visit the interactive public fishing areas map. This map provides detailed information on available species, regulations, public boat ramps, fish cleaning stations and ADA-accessible boat ramps and docks, among other features in reservoirs, lakes, streams and rivers statewide. Lake contour maps are available for some lakes, as well.
All boats are permitted at Conestoga, but speed is restricted to 5 mph.
Conestoga offers 59 picnic tables, 59 grills and two shelters.
